Nicaragua culture has been shaped by several different groups
of people. The western part of the country was colonized by Spain.
Thus, it shares much of its culture with other Spanish speaking
Latin American nations. For many years the eastern half of Nicaragua
was under British control so its culture is more akin to other
Caribbean countries that were also British protectorates.
The vast majority of Nicaraguans are mestizo, which means that
they are mixture of European and South American ancestors. The
Nicaragua culture is indicative of its peoples’ heritage.
Spanish is far and away the most widely spoken language in Nicaragua.
There are a couple of lesser-known indigenous languages and in
the east English is quite popular.
Nicaragua culture is rife with music, religion and folklore.
Along with the British influence in the east there is a fairly
strong African feel apparent in many traditions. A popular dance
music called ‘Palo de Mayo’ is widespread during the
Maypole Festival in May. The music is intense and rhythmic with
an obvious African influence.
