Nicaragua FAQs

Q. I know that Nicaragua is in South America but I don’t know exactly where. Is it landlocked? What other countries is it by?

A. Actually, Nicaragua is the largest nation in Central America. It lies between Honduras and Costa Rica and is definitely not landlocked. To the west is the Pacific Ocean and The Caribbean Sea creates the eastern border.

Q. What is the Nicaraguan economy based on, drugs or weapons?

A. Nicaraguan economy is not based on drug or gun smuggling. It is an agrarian system which relies on the export of cash crops such as coffee, sugar and bananas. Nicaraguan beef, tobacco and rum are also among the best in Central America. The tourism industry runs a close second to agriculture and will likely surpass it in the next few years. The country’s beautiful beaches, rainforests and volcanic mountains are the most popular tourist attractions. The cities of Granada and Leon are renowned for impressive architecture. Agritourism and ecotourism are both finding significant footholds in Nicaragua, particularly in the Northern Highlands.

Q. I heard that Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America. So, how many people live there and why isn’t it more popular?

A. Although Nicaragua is the largest Central American nation by land area it is the least densely populated. Almost 5.6 million people live in Nicaragua with about 54% in urban areas. Geography is a big part of the reason that the country is not more populous. Around 70% of the entire area is dominated by thick, uninhabitable rainforest. The landscaped also features several large rivers and volcanic mountains. As far as popularity among tourism goes, political turmoil once prevented it from becoming a hot spot. That is a thing of the past now. The government is stable and tourism has exploded in the last ten years.
